Most fitness professionals only give a cursory glance to goal setting. Instead, they tend to focus all their energy on the workout program and throw a few diet tips at their client as an after thought. This is extremely unfortunate, because your mindset (and the success of your efforts) about Christian weight loss is often determined by your goals.
In the last post, “The Key to Permanent Christian Weight Loss,” I mentioned that goal setting was important, yet still not the ultimate key to success. And while I stand by what I wrote, I want to make sure that the value of goal setting is not diminished.
Simply put, goal setting is powerful and actually quite necessary for successful fat loss.
By now, you have probably read all about SMART goals. You know… Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-based. Incidentally, we don’t agree 100% with that formula, but let’s get into that in a subsequent blog post.
Today, I want to explain the true value of goal setting. You see, writing down what you want is honestly only the beginning. In fact, writing down what you want is the easy part and, compared to the rest of the process, actually has very little “motivational power”.
And let’s face it: there are times when some motivation and mindset are what helps you put on your gym outfit and actually show up, let alone push through a tough workout. So be sure to write down more than just… what you want.
If writing down what you want to have, achieve, and be is not enough and only the first step, then exactly what is next?
The answer: writing down why it is important to you. So, if your goal is to lose 10 pounds of bodyfat, the important question to ask is “Why is losing 10 pounds of bodyfat important to me?”
Writing down “why” is powerful. “Why” brings in the emotional factor, which sends a deeper, more personal message to your subconscious mind. Emotions motivate. Writing down your reasons why forces you to think about and experience those emotions, as well as visualize exactly what you will receive from achieving your goal.
So, today, if you haven’t written any goals, stop now and write down some goals. But be sure not to stop there and add a new section labeled “Why” for each goal. And while you’re at it, pray that the Holy Spirit would reveal to you some of HIS reasons “why”!
Remember… emotions motivate, so find out “why”!
